What won't craft resin stick to?
Epoxy resin bonds to almost everything with a rough or porous surface — wood, canvas, cured resin, glass, and most rigid plastics. But a handful of materials are non-polar or smooth enough that resin can't grip them, and it cures without ever really bonding. Knowing which materials fall into that category is useful in both directions: it tells you what to avoid using as a permanent substrate, and it hands you a set of reliable release surfaces for moulds, mixing tools, and your work area.
Materials resin won't stick to

Rigid plastics that aren't on this list — acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS, PVC — usually do get some resin adhesion, but it can be weak or inconsistent depending on the specific plastic and its finish. Treat those as "test on a scrap piece first," not as a guaranteed release surface or a guaranteed bond.
Why some materials release and others don't
Adhesion needs either a mechanical key — pores or texture the resin can flow into and lock onto — or a chemical/polar interaction between the resin and the surface. Silicone, polyethylene, polypropylene, and PTFE are non-polar and chemically inert, so there's nothing for the resin to bond to at a molecular level, and they're typically smooth enough that there's no texture to grip either. Wax works a bit differently: resin isn't repelled by wax molecules exactly, it's that the wax coats the surface and the resin bonds to that wax layer instead, which then lifts cleanly away from whatever's underneath it.
Using non-stick materials to your advantage
Because these materials release so reliably, they're the standard toolkit for handling uncured resin. Silicone moulds are the obvious example, but a sheet of plastic or a bin bag over your work surface protects it with no risk of the resin bonding down permanently. Mixing cups made from polyethylene or polypropylene let you pop out any cured leftovers and reuse the cup. And if you're building a mould from wood, acrylic, or another material resin does stick to, a thin coat of release wax or a liner of packing tape (non-sticky side facing the resin) keeps the piece from bonding to the mould itself.
Step-by-step: prepping a non-stick release surface
- Choose the release material for the job — silicone for a reusable mould, plastic sheeting for a work surface, packing tape or release wax for a mould built from wood, acrylic, or another material resin does bond to.
- Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Dust, moisture, or residue can create texture or contamination that gives the resin something to grip.
- Apply release wax thinly and evenly, if using it — a thick or uneven coat can leave texture in the cured surface.
- Pour, then let the piece reach hard cure before demoulding. For Craft Resin that's roughly 24 hours for Arts & Crafts, 36–48 hours for Table Top, and 48–72 hours for Deep Pour at normal room temperature. Releasing too early risks distorting a piece that hasn't fully set.
- Flex or peel gradually rather than forcing it. Silicone moulds in particular release best with a slow, even flex around the edges, not a hard pull from one point.
