How to fix areas of your work that have repelled the resin

If part of your project has cured with bare, uncoated patches — or the resin visibly pulled back from an area, leaving a crater or thin ring rather than a smooth film — that's a repelling problem, not a coverage problem. Resin doesn't skip areas at random. It pulls away from anything on the surface that breaks its surface tension. This guide covers why it happens and how to correct it without redoing the whole piece.

Why resin repels

Resin needs a clean, dry, grease-free surface to bond to and flow evenly across. When it hits a contaminant, it beads up and retreats instead of spreading, leaving a bare or thin patch behind, sometimes with a small crater in the middle. Common causes:

  • Oils and grease — fingerprints, hand cream, or oil residue left on the surface before pouring.
  • Silicone contamination — residue from mould release spray, silicone caulk, or even a silicone mat that touched the surface.
  • Wax or polish — furniture wax or polish on wood that wasn't fully stripped back.
  • Dust or moisture — a damp surface, condensation, or fine dust settled into the piece before it kicked off.
  • Incompatible sealants — some sealers and stains don't fully cure compatible with resin and can leave a film that repels the pour.

It's not always obvious which one is the culprit, and sometimes it's a combination — that's the honest, slightly annoying part of diagnosing this. If you can't pin down the cause, treat the whole surface as contaminated rather than guessing at just the affected spot.

How to fix it

  1. Let the piece cure fully first. Don't try to fix a repelled area while the resin underneath is still soft — you'll just drag uncured resin around and make more of a mess.
  2. Sand the affected area and its surroundings. Use a fine-to-medium grit sandpaper to knock back the gloss and remove any surface contamination sitting in or around the bare patch. Sand a wider area than the defect itself, not just the exact spot — contamination tends to spread slightly further than it's visible.
  3. Clean thoroughly. Wipe the sanded area with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (or a similar residue-free degreaser) to strip out whatever caused the repelling in the first place. Let it dry completely before moving on.
  4. Mix and pour a fresh coat. Once the surface is clean and dry, mix a fresh batch and pour it over the repaired area. A self-levelling resin will flow into the low spot and blend with the surrounding surface. If you're pouring a noticeably thicker corrective layer, stay within your product's maximum layer thickness per pour — for Arts & Crafts resin that's up to 6mm per layer — rather than trying to fix everything in one heavy pour.
  5. Check the result before it kicks off. Tilt the piece under good light a few minutes after pouring. If you can still see a thin or dry patch, it usually means contamination is still present — better to catch it now than after it's cured again.

A second corrective coat sometimes needs a third if the underlying contamination wasn't fully removed the first time. That's normal — treat the fix as iterative rather than assuming one pass will always solve it.

Preventing it next time

  • Handle the workpiece with clean hands or gloves, and change gloves if they pick up oil, mould release, or anything else.
  • Wipe down the surface with isopropyl alcohol immediately before pouring, even if it looks clean.
  • If you used a mould release spray, keep it well away from the top surface you're about to pour onto.
  • Seal porous substrates like wood first, and confirm any stain, wax, or sealant is fully cured and resin-compatible before you pour over it.
  • Work in a clean, low-dust space and keep the piece covered while it's curing to keep airborne dust and moisture off the surface.
