Is craft resin safe for use in a fish tank for aquatic life?

Short answer: we do not currently make a claim that Craft Resin is safe for aquarium or aquatic-life use. We know this is a popular question from people building decorative inserts, ornaments, or sealing tank accessories, but we would rather be upfront about the gap than repeat an old claim we can't stand behind.

What we can actually confirm

Craft Resin has not been tested or certified for prolonged submersion in a living aquatic environment, and we don't have data on how it behaves in contact with fish, invertebrates, or aquarium water chemistry over time. That means we can't tell you it's safe for a fish tank, and we also can't tell you exactly what risk it poses — we simply haven't made that claim, and you shouldn't rely on any older material that says otherwise.

This is different from our food-safety position, where we're able to give you a clear, direct answer: we do not currently make a food-contact claim for Craft Resin. The aquarium question sits in the same category — no formal claim, so no green light.

Why this is a grey area, not a simple yes or no

Fully cured epoxy resin is generally considered chemically inert once it has finished reacting — it's no longer the same hazardous liquid it was pre-cure. That's a different question from whether a specific product has been validated for long-term contact with live aquatic organisms, though. Aquarium safety depends on things like whether the resin has fully cured before contact, whether any uncured or partially cured resin could leach into the water, and how the tank's chemistry and inhabitants interact with the cured surface over months or years — none of which we've tested for.

If you've seen marketing language elsewhere (including in older versions of our own content) claiming resin is "safe for fish tanks" or "formulated for aquatic environments," treat that as unverified. We're correcting that here.

What we do know about the uncured product

Before it cures, Craft Resin resin and hardener are classified as hazardous — they can irritate skin and eyes and should never go straight into water, a tank, or anywhere near livestock. If you're set on using resin near a tank

Some hobbyists do use epoxy resin for external tank decor, stands, or fully cured pieces that never contact the water at all. If you're considering anything that will touch tank water directly or house living creatures, that's a decision to make with your own research and caution, not on the basis of a safety claim from us — because we don't make one.
