Is Craft Resin food safe?

Craft Resin is suitable for incidental food contact once fully cured. Incidental food contact means brief, occasional contact with the fully cured surface — for example, a cured coaster under a mug or plate. It is not intended for direct, prolonged or repeated food contact.

Why this is a limited claim, not a full food-contact certification

A full food-contact certification has to be backed by specific migration testing against the regulations of the market it is sold in — for example EU Regulation 10/2011, or FDA 21 CFR in the United States. We hold a range of independent test reports for our products, and none of them is a food-contact migration test.

We do hold ASTM D-4236 and EN 71-3 assessments. EN 71-3 is a toy safety standard covering the migration of certain elements — it is not a food-contact certificate, and it is often mistaken for one.

What this means in practice

• Do not make plates, bowls, cups, chopping boards, utensils or anything else that food or drink sits on, is served from, or is cut on.
• Do not use resin to seal the inside of a tumbler, mug or drinking vessel.
• Do not use it for anything a child might put in their mouth.

Coasters are the clearest example of incidental contact: a fully cured coaster under a mug or glass is a normal, sensible use — the drink is in the vessel, not on the resin. A serving tray can carry already-plated food, but food should not be prepared on the resin or left sitting directly on it for any length of time.

If you need a fully food-contact-certified surface

Use a material that carries food-contact certification for your market, and keep the resin to the parts that food never touches.

Cured resin is not automatically food safe

Fully cured epoxy is inert and safe to handle. That is a different question from full food-contact approval, which depends on what may migrate into food over time, at temperature, and with fats, acids or alcohol present. Being safe to touch does not answer that — which is why we describe cured Craft Resin as suitable for incidental food contact, not as a certified food-contact material.
