How to reduce dust before you work with epoxy resin

Most dust that ends up in a finished piece got there before the resin was even poured — settled on the mould, floating in the air, or kicked up by cleaning the workspace five minutes too late. Where the dust actually comes from

Before blaming "airborne dust" in general, it helps to know the usual sources:

  • Dry sweeping or wiping — this doesn't remove dust, it launches it into the air, where it can stay suspended for a while before settling back down, often right onto your work.
  • Sanding or cutting — wood, previous resin layers, or trims done in or near the workspace leave fine dust on every surface, including ones you didn't touch.
  • Fabric and fibres — wool, fleece, and other fuzzy clothing shed constantly; so does hair and pet fur.
  • Moving air — fans, air conditioning vents, and open windows or doors don't create dust, but they redistribute whatever is already in the room and can drop it straight onto an open resin surface.
  • Foot traffic — people or pets walking through the space stir up dust that has already settled on the floor.

Prep the room before you prep the resin

Wipe down your work surface and anything nearby with a damp cloth rather than a dry one — a dry wipe or a duster just moves dust around instead of collecting it. Do this before you get your resin and hardener out, not while you're mixing.

Once the room is clean, give the air a chance to settle before you start pouring. Freshly disturbed dust doesn't vanish immediately — it drifts and resettles over the next while, so mixing resin right after a big clean-up defeats the purpose.

If you can dedicate a room or a section of a room to resin work and keep it closed off from regular household traffic, that's the single biggest improvement you can make. It's not essential, but every extra person, pet, or open doorway is another way for dust to arrive.

If sanding or cutting is part of the project

Any project that involves sanding wood, cutting tile, trimming a cured resin layer, or similar prep work should have that step done and fully cleaned up well before you mix your resin — not in the same session. Sanding dust is extremely fine and settles slowly, so it keeps finding its way onto surfaces for a while after you've stopped.

After sanding or cutting, vacuum the piece and the surrounding area rather than blowing it off with compressed air, which just sends the dust back into the room. A tack cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth on the piece itself picks up what a vacuum leaves behind. Only bring the piece back into your resin workspace once it's genuinely clean.

Ventilation is still a good idea

A well-ventilated room is good practice when working with any craft chemical, resin included, and that's not in conflict with reducing dust. The distinction is between general ventilation and a direct draught: a fan or air conditioning vent blowing straight across your work surface will pick up settled dust and carry it onto your piece, while a room that simply has decent airflow is fine. Keep vents and fans pointed away from your mixing and pouring area rather than turning off ventilation altogether.

Step-by-step

  1. Clean the whole room, not just the table — wipe every nearby surface with a damp cloth so dust is collected rather than scattered.
  2. Let the air settle — leave some time between cleaning and mixing so disturbed dust has a chance to come back down before you pour.
  3. Finish sanding and cutting first — do it in a separate session, vacuum and wipe down the piece afterward, and only bring it into the resin area once it's clean.
  4. Dress with it in mind — avoid wool, fleece, or anything that sheds fibres, and tie back long hair.
  5. Point airflow away from your work — keep fans and vents off your mixing and pouring surface, even in a well-ventilated room.
