How to fix rippling and discoloration in cured resin
A wavy, rippled surface or a patch of brown or amber discoloration in an otherwise clear cured piece almost always comes from the same source: a heat gun or torch held too close, or lingering too long, over one spot while you were clearing bubbles. This guide covers how to fix both problems once they're already in the cured resin, and how to avoid causing them again.
What's actually going on
Rippling and localized discoloration are heat damage, not a curing defect. When a torch or heat gun sits too close to the surface or stays in one place, it doesn't just pop bubbles — it can locally re-melt or scorch the resin. That shows up as a rippled, uneven surface (sometimes called an "orange peel" texture) and, in worse cases, as a brown or amber scorch mark.

Fixing rippling
Rippling is a surface texture problem, so it's fixed by resurfacing rather than trying to "melt it flat" again.
- Sand the affected area. Use a fine-to-medium grit sandpaper and sand evenly across the rippled section, working toward a level, uniformly matte surface. Don't stop at the first low spot — the goal is one even plane, not just knocking down the highest ripples.
- Clean off all sanding dust. Wipe the area down thoroughly. If you use a damp cloth, let the surface dry completely before moving on — any residual moisture can affect how the next layer bonds and cures.
- Pour a fresh top layer. A new coat of correctly mixed resin poured over the sanded area will bond to it and level out, and the scuffed, matte look from sanding disappears once the new layer cures.
- Let it reach full cure before handling. Judge the piece as finished only once it's fully cured, not just hard to the touch — see our Mixing Ratio article for hard cure vs. full cure timing by product.
Fixing discoloration and scorch marks
A light scorch that hasn't badly deformed the surface can sometimes be sanded away using the same approach as above, if the discoloration doesn't run deep. But once resin has genuinely browned or yellowed from heat damage, that color change is chemical — it can't be lightened or reversed by cleaning or resanding alone.
For discoloration that sanding doesn't clear, the practical fix is to disguise rather than remove it:
- Pour a tinted or pigmented top layer over the affected area to cover the discoloration, rather than trying to match cured clear resin exactly.
- Cover the full surface, not just the damaged patch, where possible — a full recoat blends far more naturally than a patch that only covers the scorched section.
- Let the new layer fully cure before judging the result or handling the piece.
If the discoloration is extensive or the piece is important to get right, it's often easier to start the top layer again with a design that intentionally incorporates color (a tinted or opaque pour) rather than fighting to hide the mark in clear resin.
Preventing it next time
- Keep the torch or heat gun moving. Pass it over the surface in sweeping motions rather than holding it still over any one spot.
- Keep your distance. Work from further away than feels necessary at first — you can always move closer if bubbles aren't clearing, but scorching isn't reversible.
- Never torch Deep Pour resin. A heat gun or torch on a Deep Pour mould risks cracking and yellowing rather than clearing bubbles. Torching is only appropriate for thin coating layers — for Deep Pour, let trapped air work its way out during the slower cure instead.
