Can craft resin break?

Cured epoxy resin is hard and durable, but it isn't unbreakable. Whether a piece cracks or chips comes down to how it was poured and cured, and what kind of stress it's put through afterward. This guide covers what actually causes resin to break and how to avoid it.

What actually causes cracking or chipping

Impact on a hard edge or corner. A resin piece can generally take normal handling — being picked up, set down, used as a coaster or tray — without issue. A hard drop onto a tile or concrete floor, or a sharp knock against a corner, can chip or crack it, the same as it would a piece of glass or hard plastic.

Working before full cure is reached. A piece feels dry to the touch well before the resin has finished curing completely. Full mechanical strength — the point at which cured resin reaches its final hardness and scratch resistance — is reached around 21 days after pouring, not at the "hard cure" stage a day or two in. Demoulding, flexing, or putting stress on a piece too early, while the resin is still working through its cure, is one of the more common reasons a piece cracks or deforms.

Excess heat during cure. Pouring more resin in one layer than a product is rated for lets heat build up faster than it can escape, and that can cause cracking as the resin cures. A heat gun or torch used incorrectly. Torching is for popping surface bubbles on thin coating layers only. Never use a heat gun or torch on Deep Pour — the heat can trigger cracking and yellowing rather than just clearing bubbles.

Thin, unsupported sections. A thin sliver of resin with no backing (an unsupported edge, a narrow bridge between two pour sections) is inherently weaker than a solid block and is more likely to snap under flex or pressure, even once fully cured.

What doesn't typically cause breakage

Normal room-temperature handling, light scratching, and everyday use within a piece's rated heat resistance shouldn't crack cured resin. If a piece feels soft, tacky, or dented rather than cracked, that's usually a cure problem (often an incorrect mixing ratio) rather than a breakage issue — see our Sticky or Soft Result article for troubleshooting that separately.

Reducing the risk

  1. Measure and mix accurately. An off ratio can leave resin under-cured and more prone to denting or deforming under stress, which weakens the piece overall.
  2. Respect the maximum layer thickness for your product. Pour within the limit rather than pushing a single layer thicker to save time.
  3. Let pieces reach full cure before demoulding or heavy use. The surface can feel ready well before the resin actually is.
  4. Skip the torch on Deep Pour. Only use a heat gun or torch on thin coating layers, moved in sweeping passes rather than held in one spot.
  5. Design around thin, unsupported edges where possible, especially on pieces that will be handled often.
