Using Epoxy Resin on Tile — Coasters, Trivets & Small Tile Projects

Epoxy resin can be poured directly onto tile, or used to fill a mould that holds a tile piece — the right approach depends on the size of the project and whether the tile stays flat or goes into something 3D like a coaster.

Preparing the tile

Glazed tile is non-porous, so resin sits on top rather than soaking in — that's good for a clean finish, but it means adhesion depends entirely on surface prep:

• Clean the tile with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, oils, and fingerprints.
• Lightly sand a glossy glaze with fine-grit sandpaper (320–400 grit) so the resin has "tooth" to grip.
• Let the tile come to room temperature before pouring — a cold tile can cause the resin to skin over unevenly.

Pouring onto tile vs pouring into a mould

For a flat piece — a coaster blank, a decorative tile — pour Epoxy Resin for Resin Art directly onto the surface and let it self-level. For a raised-edge coaster or a tile embedded in a larger shape, place the tile in a silicone mould first, then pour resin around and over it.

Avoiding bubbles on a smooth glazed surface

Glazed tile shows trapped air more than a porous surface does. After pouring, pass a heat gun or torch lightly over the surface to pop bubbles, and pour a thin seal coat first if the tile has any texture or grout lines.
