How long is the working time for craft resin before it begins to cure?

"Working time" (sometimes called pot life) is how long resin and hardener stay liquid and workable after you mix them — the window you have to pour, spread, torch out bubbles, or blend colour before the mix starts to thicken and set. It is not the same as cure time. This guide covers working time for every Craft Resin product, what makes it longer or shorter, and how it relates to hard cure and full cure.

Table Top has the shortest working time of the mixed-resin products, which is why it's applied in thin coats rather than poured deep. Deep Pour has the longest, because it's formulated to react more slowly — that slower reaction is also what lets it be poured in thick layers without overheating and cracking.

What affects working time

Batch size. A bigger mixed batch gives you less working time, not more. Resin cures exothermically — the reaction generates its own heat — and a larger volume traps more of that heat in the middle of the mix, speeding the reaction up. If you need more time to work with a project, mix smaller batches rather than one large one.

Room temperature. The figures above assume roughly 25°C. A warmer room speeds up the reaction and shortens working time; a colder room slows it down and stretches working time, but also raises the resin's viscosity, making it thicker and harder to pour or self-level. Below 15°C, warm Part A (the resin) to around 30°C before mixing to bring the viscosity back down.

Product chemistry. Deep Pour is a genuinely different formulation from Arts & Crafts and Table Top, not just a bigger pour of the same thing — its slower reaction is what makes deep sections possible at all. Because Deep Pour still generates significant heat over a large volume, room temperature control matters more as batch size grows: 1-5kg batches want 22-25°C, 5-10kg batches want 20-23°C, 10-20kg batches want 18-21°C, and anything over 20kg needs below 18°C.

Working time vs. hard cure vs. full cure

These three terms get used loosely, but they mean different things:

  • Working time — how long the mixed resin stays liquid enough to pour and manipulate.
  • Hard cure — the surface feels dry and firm to the touch. This is roughly when a piece can be handled or demoulded.
  • Full cure — the resin has essentially finished reacting.

The ~21-day figure you'll see for every mixed-resin product isn't a cure time you need to wait out before using a piece — items are hard and usable well before that. It marks when the resin reaches close to its full mechanical strength and scratch resistance, so it's more relevant to durability than to whether you can pick something up. It also isn't a condition of the heat resistance rating — that's a separate material property. Even within a product's rated heat resistance, don't set hot cookware directly on cured resin; use a trivet or mat.

UV resin is a bit of a different case: because it's single-component, it doesn't have a working time to worry about at all — it stays liquid indefinitely until it's put under a UV lamp, at which point it cures in seconds rather than hours.

Step-by-step: getting the most out of your working time

  1. Prep everything before you mix. Have your mould or surface, tools, colourants, and torch within reach so you can start using the resin the moment it's combined — don't spend working time hunting for supplies.
  2. Size your batch to the time you need. If a project needs more handling time, mix two smaller batches instead of one large one — a large batch will set faster, not slower.
  3. Know your room temperature. If it's warmer than about 25°C, expect working time to run short; if it's colder, expect thicker resin and should warm Part A first if you're below 15°C.
  4. Don't judge working time by appearance alone. Resin can still look pourable right up until it starts to gel, and viscosity climbs quickly near the end of the window — treat the stated time as the limit, not a suggestion.
  5. Leave it undisturbed once poured. The working time is short by design; the hard cure time is what actually protects the piece from dust, drips, and fingerprints, so don't touch or move it until that has passed.
